OVERVIEW OF YMCA YOUTH AND GOVERNMENT

Michigan YMCA Youth In Government prepares young people for moral and political leadership as well as informed citizenship in the American democratic process. The mission of Michigan YMCA Youth In Government is to provide the youth of Michigan with an immersive educational experience to inspire and promote life-long leadership, ethics, responsible citizenship and self-confidence through participation in a unique model state government program. In September of 2022, Michigan Youth in Government took on a shared service agreement to provide Youth in Government programs and services for the Ohio State Alliance. 

A national program organized in 1936, YMCA Youth In Government began as an opportunity for youth leaders to come together to discuss and debate real legislative issues in states across the country. It is the immersion of students in the governmental process that continues to inspire delegates and fulfills Youth in Government’s motto that, “Democracy Must Be Learned by Each Generation.” 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The position will provide dynamic, executive leadership to the YMCA organization and, in partnership with the Youth in Government advisory council , enact and implement a bold strategic vision to strengthen and expand the organization. The State Director of Michigan and Ohio Youth in Government duties will include championing and communicating the organization’s mission and relevance; being responsible for the organization’s financial stability and growth which includes fundraising; engaging, communicating and collaborating with the advisory council, as well as the extensive network of volunteers, community, corporate and government leaders and organizations. Additionally, the State Director will oversee, develop and mentor staff, manage volunteers; and oversee the organization’s day-to-day operations.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

FISCAL MANAGEMENT 

  1. Manage the youth in government program budget to meet or exceed the annual budget, including management of petty cash, credit card receipts, invoices, etc. 
  2. Meet and/or exceed revenue & expense targets in all program activities 

PHILANTHROPY AND GRANT MANAGEMENT

  1. Creates and executes annual fundraising plans to ensure an increase in financial support for the organization. This includes staffing volunteer leadership as well as the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of the donor base to support current operations, community development and long-term financial stability.
  2. Works with the Youth and Government Advisory Councils to develop strong cases for support
  3. Cultivates relationships to gain financial support for YIG in areas that need sponsorship and other philanthropic support.
  4. Provides expertise in the writing of grants, implementing evaluation metrics, and committing to continuous program improvement based on ongoing research outcomes.
  5. Ensures regular communications with grant funders, foundations, and donors.
  6. Leads management of Youth in Government grants. Gathers data, compiles and prepares national statistical and assigned strategic plan reports to be used in grants and community benefit statements. 
  7. Maintains an efficient and effective tracking and reporting system that supports the financial development efforts of the Alliance. 
  8. Assists with management of a comprehensive process for timely and accurate grant evaluation, quality compliance, project and program fulfillment. 

STATE-WIDE COORDINATION, STRATEGIC RELATIONSHIPS & ADVOCACY

  1. Establish and maintain strong, working relationships with state legislators, YMCA and other non-profit peers, and the organization’s existing and prospective donors and volunteers.
  2. State-wide coordination & relationships
  3. Work with the YIG branch board,  made up of leaders across the state, to develop vision, direction, and local support for the youth & government program.
  4. Provide vision, leadership, direction, motivation, and support to Y staff and volunteers throughout the state of Michigan.
  5. Develop meaningful peer relationships with other YMCA youth and government professionals
  6. Participate and represent the states of Michigan and Ohio state youth and government program in local, state, national and international meetings, trainings, and events
  7. Maintain and enhance relationships with government officials and leadership staff
  8. Work collaboratively with the Michigan and Ohio State Alliance to support statewide advocacy work, including advocacy days; prepare talking points or other advocacy materials during legislative sessions; support the building of relationships with lawmakers and key decision-makers at the state level, and other supportive duties as assigned.
  9. Manage the Alliance Advocacy Committee and grass roots advocacy for YMCAs in Michigan.

STRATEGIC PROGRAM LEADERSHIP & COMMUNICATION

  1. Along with the Alliance CEO and YIG councils, set a vision for Youth in Government for being a best-in-class program, committed to the highest outcomes for youth.
  2. Through thoughtful leadership, advances the youth in government strategy with a focus on driving programmatic, quality, consistency, growth and innovation.
  3. Lead youth in government program development opportunities and explore strategic partnerships and collaborations to innovate the model.
  4. Promote and incorporate the YMCA five core values standards into curriculum and program implementation
  5. Implement strategies statewide that increase inclusive programming.
  6. Provide leadership and guidance for all program initiatives including regular business operations, volunteer development, strategic planning, staff training and development, program development, curriculum development, program evaluation, community outreach, data collection, special events, financial planning and maintenance of budget, and all other duties as assigned.
  7. Provide active, on-site leadership and management of all programs, events, and meetings.
  8. Ensure completion of all necessary administrative duties and logistical arrangements for all programs, events, and meetings.

PERFORMANCE ACHIEVEMENTS & RESULTS

  1. Supervise the Director of Programs and Operations and all other direct reports as assigned. 
  2. Accountable for leading a communicative, inclusive, and transparent internal staff culture where best practices, high outcomes, and shared accountability are the norm.
  3. Build trusting, strong and collaborative relationships with team members within the department, across the State alliance.
  4. Provide team members feedback, coaching, mentoring, and employee development opportunities
  5. Hold team accountable for achieving at high levels to meet strategic goals and objectives
  6. Model inclusive leadership behaviors and embraces all dimensions of diversity - building strong teams that apply their diverse skills and perspectives to our mission
  7. Responsible for hiring, coaching, and managing direct reports and ensuring alignment with Alliance practices for all positions within their organizational structure
  8. Conducts Cycle Check-ins and the Annual Check-In with direct reports to ensure progress with Objectives and Key Results (OKRs), provide ongoing coaching and feedback, and discuss development opportunities. 

GENERAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Support the mission, vision, and goals of the State Alliance of Michigan YMCAs; promote character development and the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. 
  2. Promote the value of diversity and the importance of being an inclusive organization to others inside and outside of the organization. 
  3. Represent the YMCA as needed through various groups, organizations, and/ or coalitions. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations. 
  4. Special projects as assigned. This is not intended to be all-inclusive. It is understood that the employee will also perform other reasonably related business duties if requested by the supervisor.
  5. Expand learning and personal skill development through participation in local and national events and career development training
  6. Partner with Alliance Staff on information technology issues, such as website design, surveys, database software, etc.
  7. Act as a full-time, exempt staff person of the State Alliance of Michigan YMCAs

QUALIFICATIONS (ALSO CALLED ENTRY REQUIREMENTS OR KNOW HOW):

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or a combination of higher education and experience with continued pursuit of a degree is preferred. 
  • Equivalent of 5+ years work experience.
  • Experience with event management, volunteer management, instructional leadership or teen
  • leadership programs.
  • Experience  with Youth in Government programs is a plus. 
  • YMCA Multi-Team Leader certification is required or will be obtained within the first 2 years of employment.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic backgrounds. 
  • Certifications in CPR/AED, O2 Administration and First Aid required, Lifeguarding preferred.  
  • Trainer in Y USA training courses strongly preferred.
  • Proven record of quality training creation and delivery required.
  • Strong organizational, planning, project management, problem resolution, communication, presentations and facilitation skills essential.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and attention to detail required. Must be comfortable with presentation technology and overall computer skills including Google, Microsoft Office LMS and e-learning authoring software.
  • Superior time management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects with tight deadlines.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills and ability to create and manage an annual budget.
  • Ability to travel locally and throughout Michigan and Ohio, including overnight trips.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position works remotely from a home office within the state of Michigan. A company laptop computer and other necessary home office equipment and supplies will be provided, with the option of using personal equipment.

COMPENSATION

Salary range of $65,000-$73,000 per year, depending on qualifications. Health and retirement benefits are provided along with generous vacation and sick time.
