Keynote Speakers

John U. Bacon

John U. Bacon

John U. Bacon has worked nearly three decades as a writer, a public speaker, and a college instructor, winning awards for all three.

He has authored ten books on sports, business, health, and history, the last six of which are national bestsellers, including Bo's Lasting Lessons, Endzone, and The Great Halifax Explosion.

Bacon has also pursued his passions for radio, television, coaching and teaching. In 2007 he was invited to give weekly sports commentary on Michigan Radio every Friday morning and appears weekly on Michigan Radio’s Stateside, and occasionally on National Public Radio, which awarded him the PRNDI prize for nation's best commentary in 2014. He appears often on TV, including HBO, ESPN, Fox Business, MSNBC, and the Big Ten Network, where he is a frequent contributor to both “Icons” series.

Dr. Benjamin Houltberg

Dr. Benjamin Houltberg

Dr. Benjamin Houltberg is a developmental scientist, President and CEO of Search Institute, social entrepreneur, and experienced marriage and family therapist.

He is widely published on topics including adolescent social and emotional competencies, resilience through relationships, and character and identity development through sports. He has proven success in leading large research teams and has consulted with several high-performance organizations to create thriving cultures. He has been instrumental in developing tools and resources aimed at promoting resilience through relationships.

Ben has been a member of the Search Institute team since February 2020, holding the positions of Vice President of Research and Practice and Interim President and CEO.

Our Network Gatherings give conference attendees dedicated time to connect with their cohorts from across the state to discuss best practices, trends, and challenges.

The Lansing Convention Center is located in the heart of downtown Lansing, Michigan.

We’ll meet at the Lansing Center, which is located in the heart of Michigan’s capital. Lansing Center is conveniently attached to the Radisson Hotel via a covered sky bridge that stretches over the Grand River.

Parking lots under and north of Lansing Center are available for conference attendees to park free of charge on the day of the conference. If there is a parking attendant present, please tell them you are attending the Michigan YMCA Leaders Conference. The entrance to the parking lot underneath the Lansing Center is on Cedar Street.
